Hotels in Stafford and Staffordshire with special
offers and weekend breaks
The fine County Town of Stafford is well placed in the heart
of Staffordshire, brimming with a magnificent array of architectural, cultural
and entertainment attractions it is ideal for a weekend break. Nestling on the
edge of Cannock Chase, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Stafford is the
obvious centre for visiting the whole of Staffordshire and neighbouring counties.
The world renowned potteries lie to the north of Stafford including Wedgwood,
Royal Doulton, and Spode. Nearby you'll find the 18th-century mansion, Shugborough,
one of a rich collection of historic houses and home to Royal photographer,
Earl Patrick Lichfield. The town of Lichfield itself, with its magnificent three
spired Cathedral lies to the southeast, the brewing capital of Burton upon Trent
is just 20 miles away and Britain's top theme park, Alton Towers is just a short
drive away. Indeed 4 of the UK's top attractions are based in the county of
Staffordshire; Alton Towers, Drayton Manor Theme Park, Waterworld and Tamworth
Snowdome.
Stafford Borough is steeped in history, from its Stone Age origins, through
Roman and medieval times to modern industrial life. Its network of towns and
villages with picturesque churches, castles and stately homes reflects the unique
identity of this part of the north Midlands. Buildings such as the Ancient High
House, the largest timber framed town house in England, Izaak Walton's Cottage
and Stafford Castle, attract visitors from across the world.
Stafford Castle's strategic site and prominent vantage point was quickly recognised
by the Normans, and William the Conqueror is believed to have ordered defences
to be built against a still hostile and rebellious native community. The fortunes
of the castle and its owners, the Stafford family, fluctuated greatly. Earl
Ralph, a founder member of the Order of the Garter, built a massive stone keep
on top of the motte in 1347. In 1444, Humphrey Stafford was created Duke of
Buckinghamshire and the castle reached its heyday. The Castle Visitor Centre
brings Stafford Castle to life. A collection of artefacts from archaeological
excavations is on display and guides are pleased to answer your questions on
the castle and its site. A scale model of the motte and bailey castle shows
what it may have looked like in 1100 AD.
The Ancient High House is one of the finest Tudor buildings in the whole of
England. Once dominating the skyline of Stafford, it is the largest remaining
timber framed town house in the country. Royalty was welcomed to the house in
1642 when King Charles I stayed there en route to Shrewsbury, and the house
retains an extensive collection of period furniture and architectural features.
It is also the home of the Staffordshire Yeomanry Museum.
With the Theatre, Gardens, Restaurants and history I am sure you will agree
Stafford has plenty to offer for weekend breaks in the heart of England.
